I have watched 3 episodes of The Waltons today. I remember watching them when I was young. This is the type of television show that needs to come back. It deals with how the world was back in the 1930's-1940's. Each episode has a moral lesson. No matter how bad things ever got on Walton Mountain they knew they had their family there to back them. They got upset with each other but they always made up and were a REAL family.
To me family is what you have when everything else is gone. The shows on television today promote a different way of life than the Waltons had. Today the television is promoting single-parent families, teen pregnancies, and just pure garbage. When did we change what was acceptable for our families to watch on television? I just think television has such an influence on society that maybe if we were to start promoting shows like the Waltons and The Cosby Show, maybe we could straighten some of our problems in society.
How many families can actually say they are that close? A few I am sure, but, how many really turn to each other when any member is in need? I can not imagine my own family ever being that close anymore. At one time my entire extended family were that close. We would have our family reunions and there would be close to 200 people there. Now, if 50 people show up it is considered a big gathering.
Most of us over 35 can remember when times were simple. If I were out of school I was on my bike and off all day and no one had to worry about me. We played with friends outside and not on a computer. We did kid things, not violent video games. At night the most violent tv show was the Six Million Dollar Man and Wonder Woman. Saturday mornings were spent watching cartoons like Fat Albert, Looney Tunes, or the Flintstones. Maybe these young mothers and fathers should check up on what their "little darlings" are watching on tv. By the way, the cartoon network is pure filth late at night, they call it Adult Swim...just a warning if you have young ones or grandchildren at home.
